Why this is hard

In a remote deposition the recording is not a byproduct of the session, it is the product. A dropped segment, a stretch of audio nobody can transcribe, or a gap the log cannot account for does not degrade the experience — it damages the record, and it does so after everyone has gone home.

The usual video priorities also invert here. Resolution matters less than continuity, and audio matters more than both. What has to be engineered is capture that survives the weakest link in the call, and a chain of custody a challenge cannot unpick.

  • A mix that cannot be unmixed

    A composite recording folds every participant into one track, so an objection over an answer survives as one waveform. Playback sounds normal — the separation was discarded when the mix was written, and nothing downstream can put it back.

  • One record, several clocks

    Endpoints stamp their streams by their own clocks; the file is assembled against the recorder's. Over a long session the two separate, and a moment the transcript cites by time sits elsewhere in the video.

  • The copy that became the original

    A recording is re-encoded for browser playback on its way to the archive, and the integrity hash is computed on what arrives. Both play identically; only one is the file that was captured.

That case is the one worth engineering for, not the happy path. It means recording at a point that does not depend on the weakest link in the call, a reconnect that resumes rather than restarts, and a log that marks the gap explicitly — an annotated gap is defensible, a silent seam is not.

Audio degrades past intelligibility well before video starts looking bad, which is why it should be budgeted first rather than treated as the cheap track. In practice that means codec settings chosen for speech rather than for music or bitrate, and measuring intelligibility on the real link instead of inferring it from a number in a config file.

With an append-only audit log that records access as an event rather than a permission, plus a periodic access review. The question a challenge asks is not whether access was restricted but whether you can reconstruct what actually happened — those are different systems, and only the second one survives the question.
